Review: 2018 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

With best-in-class towing, understated styling, and high-tech entertainment and convenience features, the 2018 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 is a Richmond driver’s dream come true.

We’d love for you to come to our convenient Chester location for a test drive so you can get behind the wheel and see for yourself, but first get all the details on Virginia’s favorite full-size pickup:

You have the option between three engines when choosing a Chevy Silverado to suit your needs. The base powertrain is a 4.3-liter V6 Flex-Fuel mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission, making 285 horsepower and 305 lb-ft of torque. Next up is a 5.3-liter V8 Flex-Fuel that makes 355 horsepower and 383 lb-ft of torque, and the most powerful option is a 6.2-liter V8 Flex-Fuel that churns out 420 horsepower and 460 lb-ft of torque. Both V8s are connected to an 8-speed automatic transmission. All options have standard two-wheel drive, with available four-wheel drive.

The base engine can tow up to 7,600 pounds, while the 5.3-liter can tow up to 11,100 and the 6.2-liter has a towing capacity of 12,500 pounds. Each model comes standard with Tow/Haul mode to reduce shift cycling and is available with a trailer brake controller and Rear Vision Camera.

Comfort and Convenience

The 2018 Silverado comes in eight trims: Work Truck, LS, LT, LTZ, LT Z71, LTZ Z71, Custom, and High Country. The Silverado 1500 Work Truck is the perfect option for professionals who need much more than a commuter truck, but don’t need all the bells and whistles of an upper trim. It comes standard with Teen Driver technology (useful if others will be getting behind the wheel), single-zone climate control, cruise control, power doors and windows, and a Black CornerStep rear bumper. The LS trim adds heated exterior mirrors, Chevrolet MyLink Radio with 7-inch touchscreen, Bluetooth tech, and OnStar 4G LTE and built-in Wi-Fi for up to seven devices.

If you're looking for a fully equipped pickup in the mid-price range, the LT is a great option. It has an EZ Lift & Lower tailgate, rear vision camera with dynamic gridlines, Sirius XM Satellite Radio, HD Radio, leather-wrapped steering wheel, and Chevrolet MyLink with 8-inch touchscreen. Upper trims are equipped with dual-zone climate control, universal home remote, navigation system, Bose 7-speaker audio, wireless charging pad, heated steering wheel, and leather-appointed seating.

Safety and Tech

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration gave the 2018 Chevy Silverado 1500 a best-possible 5-Star Overall Rating.

Additionally, it’s available with advanced driver assistance technology. The Enhanced Driver Alert Package includes Lane Keep Assist, Forward Collision Alert, Low Speed Forward Automatic Braking, Front and Rear Park Assist, IntelliBeam high beam assist, and Safety Alert Driver’s Seat.
